"I sometimes wonder whether we could use some of the Buddhist ideas of psychology (and not just facile Zen paradoxes ).
Here's one: the "five faculties".
They are (in order, the order matters):
faith
energy
mindfulness
concentration
wisdom
In Buddhist meditation, the development of these is considered a matter of balance.
The first, faith, is actually "sraddha" or "saddha" etc. in the old languages.
It is very easily misunderstood in modern Western culture, the concept is not at all the same as what most would mean by "Christian faith". Maybe it's what we mean when we talk about "a leap of faith". It's not belief, although it's connected. It's what allows action to occur.
Energy is fairly self-explanatory.
The third, mindfulness, is something like "self-recollection". Are you actually aware, awake to the present moment, to what you are doing. Its place at the middle of the list indicates its role as a fulcrum. The development of the other four must be in balance, and can only happen with the support of this one.
So : faith and wisdom must be in balance. (Faith without wisdom is blind, wisdom without faith is lame). Mindfulness helps balance them.
Energy and concentration must be in balance, and mindfulness balances them.
Chaffcombe's last post - my interpretation of course - is referring to how
faith must be the starting point (that's why it's number one on the list).
References to the necessity of tested systems represent the analytical faculty, which in the Buddhist system would connect to wisdom.
Too much of one of these without the other will not achieve results.
If we only analyze and find fault, and never take the leap of faith, we cannot develop because we cannot act. If we jump in without any testing, we basically believe in magic and become a "hostage of fortune", if you like. Blindly following a guru or "magic indicator" in trading is the same case, and it's just like becoming caught in a religious cult.
I guess the balance between energy and concentration could be related to over/undertrading among other things.
So, which faculty do you favour? Which are you deficient in?
Just another angle - hope it helped someone!
